Opposition Leader Kizza Besigye Hospitalized Amid Health Concerns
Kampala – Fresh concern surrounds the health of veteran Ugandan opposition leader Colonel (Rtd) Dr. Kizza Besigye after he was reportedly rushed from prison to a medical facility overnight in a worrying condition.
His party, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), announced on Tuesday morning that Besigye was taken under heavy security from Luzira Prison to a medical facility at Bugolobi Village Mall after his health “deteriorated sharply.”
In an online statement, the party described Besigye’s condition as having reached a “critical” stage. The PFF urgently called on the government to grant his personal doctors and family immediate, unrestricted access to him.
“We have received credible reports that Dr. Besigye was rushed in the night from Luzira Prison to a medical facility at Bugolobi Village Mall under heavy security,” the party’s message read.
The statement took a strong political tone, adding, “It is a tragedy that a man who has dedicated his life to the health and freedom of others is being denied his own right to medical dignity. We hold the regime and the prison authorities fully accountable for his well-being.”
As of Tuesday morning, there has been no immediate official statement from the government or prison authorities regarding Besigye’s health status or the circumstances leading to his hospitalization.
Dr. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and a persistent critic of the government, has a long history of arrests and detentions. His health while in custody has been a recurring point of contention between the opposition and the state.
The situation is likely to escalate political tensions, with supporters and rights groups expected to call for transparency regarding his medical treatment and legal status.
