President Museveni to Address Uganda on Ebola Outbreak Wednesday Evening
Kampala, Uganda – Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will address the nation on Wednesday evening at 8:00 PM local time regarding the ongoing Ebola situation in the country.
In a post shared on X, President Museveni stated: “Fellow Ugandans, especially the Bazzukulu. Tomorrow evening at 8pm, I will address the country on the Ebola situation in Uganda. Please tune in.” The announcement has been widely circulated and is trending on the platform.
Current Situation
The outbreak involves Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD), first declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) Ituri Province on May 15, 2026. As of June 8, Uganda has recorded 19 confirmed cases, mostly imported by Congolese nationals, with two deaths and no community transmission reported.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the situation a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). A $518 million response plan has been developed in coordination with the Africa CDC, focusing on enhanced surveillance, treatment, and regional collaboration.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently praised Uganda’s proactive measures during a visit to Kampala. Officials continue to emphasize key preventive actions: thorough handwashing, prompt reporting of symptoms, and maintaining open borders while strengthening screening.
Background and Response
The Bundibugyo strain is one of the less common Ebola viruses; there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for it, though supportive care significantly improves survival rates.
Uganda has activated strong surveillance, border screening, and treatment units, drawing on experience from previous outbreaks. Measures include restrictions on large gatherings in some contexts and heightened vigilance, but the government has stressed that the situation remains under control and that normal economic and social activities should continue where possible.
President Museveni’s upcoming address is expected to provide the latest updates, reassurances to the public, and any additional guidance on the national response.
