Four Toddlers Stabbed to Death at Nursery School in Uganda’s Capital
KAMPALA, Uganda – Four children, all approximately two to three years old, have been brutally stabbed to death at a nursery school in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, police have confirmed.
The attack occurred on Thursday morning at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program School in the upmarket Ggaba suburb. Police said three boys and one girl were killed instantly in the assault, which involved more than one knife.
A 39-year-old man has been detained and is being questioned by authorities.
“Investigations continue to establish his motive, background, and any other relevant circumstances surrounding this heinous crime,” the Uganda Police Force stated on X.
According to police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, the suspect had visited the school recently to inquire about enrolling a child and was told to return on Thursday. “He paid for admission [and] after that proceeded and attacked these children, killing four of them instantly,” Kawala told reporters.
The attack happened before 11:00 a.m. local time (08:00 GMT), prompting a distress call that police responded to immediately. The other 10 children who were at the school at the time have since been reunited with their parents.
News agency AFP quoted Kawala as saying that angry parents at the scene attempted to lynch the suspect before he was taken into police custody.
Videos circulating on social media show crowds of distraught and angry individuals, some believed to be parents desperately seeking news of their children. As sunset approached, a somber mood hung over the school, which remained cordoned off with staff gathered nearby.
Police chief Abas Byakagaba has visited the school and appealed to the public to remain calm while investigations continue. Investigators remain at the scene, and authorities have promised to provide further details later.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the East African nation, raising serious concerns about the safety of young learners in schools.
