Justice Flavian Zeija Vetted, Set to Become Uganda’s Chief Justice
KAMPALA – Uganda’s Parliament has completed its vetting process for Honourable Justice Flavian Zeija, the nominee for the country’s next Chief Justice, moving the landmark judicial appointment closer to finalization.
The Parliamentary Appointments Committee convened earlier today to question and assess the suitability of Justice Zeija, following his nomination by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. A parliamentary official confirmed that the committee’s report will now be forwarded to the President, the appointing authority, in accordance with standard procedural rules.
This crucial step comes after the formal announcement on Thursday, 22 January 2026, in which President Museveni exercised his powers under Article 142(1) of the 1995 Constitution to appoint Justice Zeija as Chief Justice, acting on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission.
The constitutionally mandated process required the President to submit the nominee’s name to Parliament for approval, which was duly granted, affirming the legislative branch’s consent.
With the committee’s vetting now concluded, the path is clear for Justice Zeija to assume the office of the head of the Judiciary. He will succeed the former Chief Justice, taking the helm of Uganda’s judicial system at a pivotal time.
