Nigerian High Commission Urges Calm, Low Profile After Eastern Cape Unrest
PRETORIA — Nigeria’s High Commission in South Africa has advised its citizens to exercise caution and maintain a low profile following an outbreak of violence in the Eastern Cape, urging them to avoid protests as authorities move to restore order.
The unrest unfolded in the KuGompo area after tensions flared over the reported “coronation” of an Igbo traditional leader. While the event sparked protests, Nigerian officials clarified that no official coronation had taken place, describing the gathering as purely cultural in nature.
What began as peaceful demonstrations escalated dramatically, with reports of vehicles being set alight and several shops looted. Protesters leveled accusations against foreign nationals, alleging they contributed to local tensions—claims that South African authorities have yet to verify.
In response to the volatile situation, the Nigerian High Commission issued a statement calling on its nationals to prioritize their personal safety. Officials are closely monitoring developments as local law enforcement works to de-escalate tensions and prevent further clashes between community members.
