UPDF Detains Two Senior Officers Amid Security Shake-Up, Alleged Leaks
KASENYI, UGANDA – The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has detained two senior military officers at the Kasenyi military barracks following orders from the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Major General Don William Nabasa and Brigadier General Johnson Namanya Abaho are currently being held in military custody, according to multiple reports. Maj Gen Nabasa, who has previously commanded key units, is responsible for policy and strategy, while Brig Gen Namanya was recently recalled from immigration control duties.
The detentions are being described as part of a broader push for discipline within the ranks, a stance Gen Kainerugaba has emphasized in recent weeks. However, no official charges have been announced, and the UPDF has remained silent on the matter.
Alleged Security Breaches
According to intelligence reports cited by local media, the detentions come amid revelations of “weevils” within top security circles—individuals allegedly collaborating with the opposition to undermine the government of President Yoweri Museveni.
Sources indicate that the arrests have raised concerns at high levels, with State House officials reportedly puzzled over how former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, managed to evade a 24-hour security surveillance net. The opposition leader is currently in the United States, where he is said to be holding meetings with American officials.
The developments signal a growing internal security operation within the military and intelligence services, though official statements have yet to be released regarding either the detentions or the alleged surveillance breach.
