Deadly Ambush in Northwest Nigeria Claims Lives of Soldiers, Police, and Civilian
KEBBI STATE, Nigeria — A jihadist attack on a military convoy in northwest Nigeria has killed at least 11 people, including nine soldiers, a police officer, and a civilian, according to local sources. The assault occurred on a highway in Kebbi State, marking a significant escalation in a region previously less affected by the country’s long-running insurgency.
Local officials reported that the attackers are believed to be members of Lakurawa, a jihadist group affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) that has been operating in the northwest. The group’s presence in the region represents a geographic shift for insurgency-related violence, which has traditionally been concentrated in Nigeria’s northeast.
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris visited survivors receiving treatment at a hospital following the attack. He described the assault as “a very unfortunate situation.” While the governor confirmed the incident after meeting with injured soldiers, he did not provide an official death toll.
Insecurity remains the most pressing challenge confronting President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which has faced mounting pressure to address violence by armed groups across the country since taking office.
