EU Ambassador’s April Fool’s Prank Puts Ugandan Pineapples in the Spotlight
KAMPALA, Uganda – What began as a playful April Fool’s joke has turned unexpected attention toward Uganda’s pineapple industry, after the European Union’s ambassador to Uganda announced a fictional consulate aimed at boosting fruit exports.
On April 1, Ambassador Jan Sadek posted on X that the EU was opening a consulate general on the Kalangala Islands to promote Ugandan pineapple exports, complete with plans for a dedicated airport to ensure fresh delivery to Brussels. “Ugandan pineapple is the best in the world,” he wrote.
The post quickly gained traction, drawing likes from high-profile figures including Ugandan military leader Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who praised the effort as “modern social media diplomacy.” Farmers also engaged enthusiastically, sharing ideas for processing plants and requesting real export assistance.
The next day, Sadek revealed the announcement had been an April Fool’s prank. However, he stood by his praise for Uganda’s pineapples and highlighted ongoing EU support for the country’s agricultural sector.
The joke carried a kernel of truth: Uganda’s Kalangala Islands are indeed a commercial pineapple hub, and the country exported nearly $4 million worth of pineapples in 2023.
