Security Forces Block NUP Delegation from Accessing Bobi Wine’s Home on Luwum Day

Kampala, Uganda – A delegation of National Unity Platform (NUP) leaders and lawyers was blocked by security forces from accessing the Magere home of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, on a day the nation commemorated Archbishop Janani Luwum’s martyrdom.
The delegation, led by NUP Deputy President John Baptist Nambeshe, attempted to check on Kyagulanyi’s family amid what the party describes as an ongoing siege of the residence. Security personnel, including police and military operatives, prevented them from entering the premises, leading to a standoff.
Lawyer Kakuru Tumusiime was arrested during the confrontation, which the NUP characterized as violent. According to party statements, Tumusiime was “brutalised” and detained for several hours before being taken to a police station. There, he was interrogated about Kyagulanyi’s whereabouts and subsequently charged with “common nuisance.” He was later released on bond.
Kyagulanyi himself reacted to the incident on social media, writing: “This morning, a team of @NUPUg lawyers and leaders tried to access our home in Magere. They were blocked by police and military operatives who have kept my home under siege since they raided it a month ago. They violently arrested one of our lawyers, Kakuru Tumusiime, and brutalised him.”
He added: “All this criminality taking place on a day our nation is commemorating Bishop Janani Luwum Day. UGANDA WILL BE FREE. #FreeUgandaNow”
The incident comes approximately one month after Uganda’s disputed January elections, which Kyagulanyi contested, alleging fraud against President Yoweri Museveni’s declared victory. Security forces have maintained a presence around the opposition leader’s residence since a reported raid last month, with police defending the measure as a necessary security operation while Kyagulanyi remains in hiding.
The confrontation on a day dedicated to honoring a figure of peaceful resistance underscored the ongoing post-election tensions and the widening rift between the government and opposition.
