Uganda District Chair Peter Banura Dies in Hit-and-Run Crash
KIKUUBE, Uganda – Araali Peter Banura, the first and current LC5 Chairperson of Kikuube District, was killed in a hit-and-run accident on April 4, 2026, just hours after posting optimistically about the region’s oil future.
The incident occurred along the Hoima-Fort Portal road in Butyamba Village. According to police, a Toyota Hiace commuter taxi, locally known as a “drone,” lost control and struck Banura and several other bystanders. He was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Authorities have impounded the vehicle, but the driver remains at large.
Banura, the son of Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Major General (Rtd.) Matayo Kyaligonza, had just been elected to serve another term as the district’s chairman. Hours before his death, he posted a video on X highlighting progress at the Kingfisher oil project site, a key development in the district’s oil-driven economy.
News of his death drew immediate mourning from national leaders. Vice President Robinah Nabbanja described him as “a young man deeply committed to leadership and service” and “a very humble man who still had much life ahead of him.”
Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi called Banura a “humble, dedicated young leader,” while State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Barugahara noted he was a member of General Muhoozzi Kainerugaba’s Patriotic League of Uganda, calling his death “a profound loss to his family, the Obukama bwa Bunyoro Kitara, and Uganda as a whole.”
Banura had served as the pioneer LCV chairperson of Kikuube District since its creation in 2019. Leaders say his death leaves a significant gap in the district’s leadership as it navigates an oil-fuelled future. The number of fatalities from the crash remains unconfirmed.
