Arizona State University Liberty Alliance Honors the Legacy of Ugandan Activist Angella Namirembe

TEMPE, ARIZONA – The Arizona State University community, led by student John Mugabi, has come together in a powerful display of global solidarity to mourn the tragic passing and celebrate the life of Angella Namirembe, a dedicated law student and enthusiast of Uganda’s National Unity Platform (NUP).
The gathering, held at the university, served as a heartfelt tribute to Namirembe, who passed away three days ago in a road accident. Attendees expressed a shared conviction that her death was not a mere accident but a suspected assassination, citing her fearless activism which posed a significant threat to tyrannical and authoritarian regimes in Uganda.
“In this moment of profound grief, we remember Angella not just for her life, but for her cause,” said John Mugabi, addressing the somber assembly. “She was a beacon of the freedom-fighting spirit, actively involved in the struggle for liberty and the rule of law in Africa.”
The event highlighted Namirembe’s alignment with pro-democracy movements, including the Students for Liberty and the Give-a-To movement, which advocate for empowerment and political change in Africa. Her work, as noted by the speakers, was instrumental in building strong relations among activists and directly confronting oppressive structures.
The memorial was distinguished by its international character, featuring representatives from a coalition of nations including Bolivia, Nicaragua, Argentina, the Czech Republic, and India. This diverse gathering underscored the universal fight for freedom and the global impact of Namirembe’s activism.
“Collectively, we send our message of condolence and solidarity,” the group stated. “We stand with the liberty and freedom movement in Africa. The legacy of Angella Namirembe has inspired us all, and we pledge to carry her torch forward.”
The coalition at Arizona State University vows to continue advocating for the principles Angella Namirembe championed, offering courage and strength to her comrades in Uganda and across the African continent. Her life serves as a poignant reminder of the high cost of freedom and the unbreakable spirit of those who dare to fight for it.
