Captain Mike Mukula Drags Exiled Promoter to Court Over False Raila Odinga Poisoning Claims

NAKAWA, UGANDA – Captain Mike Mukula, a prominent Ugandan politician and businessman, has initiated a private prosecution against exiled music promoter Suudiman Lukwago for allegedly publishing false and defamatory statements claiming Mukula poisoned the late Kenyan politician Raila Odinga.

The legal action, filed at the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court under Criminal Offence No. NAK-00-CR-C0-0574-2025, accuses Lukwago of criminal libel and spreading harmful falsehoods.

According to the court documents, the case stems from a video circulated online in which Suudiman Lukwago is alleged to have made several incendiary statements. He reportedly claimed that Raila Odinga “never died of a heart failure, he was killed by Michael Mukula,” and alleged that Mukula was “hired by Muhoozi Kainerugaba, a drunkard feck general in Uganda.”
Furthermore, Lukwago is accused of stating in writing on the same video that “Raila Odinga was Poisoned by Michael Mukula during his Visit to Uganda- a secret mission orchestrated by [President] Museveni and Muhoozi Kainerugabai.”
The complaint, filed by Okello Joshua on behalf of the prosecution, describes these statements as “forged content” that was “maliciously created and circulated with the clear intent to mislead the public, incite outrage, spread hatred against Kenyans and Ugandans and malign the reputation” of President Museveni, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and Captain Mike Mukula.
The prosecution argues that the statements violate Sections 179 and 180 of the Uganda Penal Code Act. Section 179 defines libel as the unlawful publication of defamatory matter, while Section 180 describes defamatory matter as anything likely to injure a person’s reputation by exposing them to hatred.
Captain Mukula is now seeking a court order for the arrest of Suudiman Lukwago should he ever return to Uganda. Reports indicate that Lukwago currently lives in exile in the United States, having fled Uganda years ago.
The case highlights the legal consequences of spreading unfounded allegations, particularly those with the potential to damage international relations and the reputations of public figures. The court will determine whether a prima facie case exists to proceed with the formal charges against the accused.
