China–U.S. Relations Strengthen as President Xi and President Trump Hold Strategic Phone Call

In a significant diplomatic exchange, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald J. Trump, during which both leaders reaffirmed the importance of stable and constructive relations between the world’s two largest economies.
According to President Xi, China–U.S. relations have followed a “steady and positive trajectory” since the two leaders met in Busan. He emphasized that this progress has been welcomed not only by both nations but also by the broader international community. The developments, he noted, once again prove a long-standing principle: cooperation between China and the United States benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both.
President Xi stressed that a future in which China and the United States “help each other succeed and prosper together” is not just an aspiration, but “a tangible prospect within reach.” He called on both sides to maintain the current momentum and continue advancing bilateral ties based on equality, respect, and mutual benefit. This, he said, requires expanding areas of cooperation, narrowing differences, and creating new opportunities that can deliver meaningful benefits to the people of both countries—and contribute positively to global stability.
During the call, President Xi also reiterated China’s principled position on the Taiwan question. He highlighted that Taiwan’s return to China is embedded in the post-World War II international order. Reflecting on history, Xi noted that China and the United States once fought side by side against fascism and militarism. In light of present challenges, he said, it is even more crucial for both countries to jointly safeguard the victories and principles established after WWII.
The phone conversation underscores ongoing efforts by Beijing and Washington to manage differences, reinforce dialogue, and explore new avenues for cooperation amid a complex global landscape.
Diplomatic observers view the exchange as an encouraging step in maintaining stable China–U.S. relations, which remain essential for international peace, economic growth, and global security.
