China Warns Against External Interference in Nigeria, Backs Tinubu Government

In a significant diplomatic move, China has issued a statement supporting Nigeria’s sovereignty and warning against external interference in its internal affairs. The statement comes in response to recent remarks from former US President Donald Trump, who had threatened possible military action over alleged persecution of Christians in the West African nation.
The Chinese government emphasized its firm support for the administration of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, acknowledging the country’s ongoing efforts toward national development and stability. Beijing articulated a clear position against using religion or human rights as a pretext for intervention in another nation’s domestic matters.
“The international community should respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and refrain from interfering in their internal affairs,” a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson stated, aligning with Beijing’s long-standing principle of non-interference.
The context for China’s statement stems from actions taken during the previous US administration. While in office, President Trump designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to claims of severe religious persecution, a label that carried the threat of sanctions and, in his recent rhetoric, even potential military involvement.
China’s public backing of the Tinubu government reinforces the growing strategic and economic partnership between Beijing and Abuja, which includes extensive infrastructure projects and investments under the Belt and Road Initiative. The statement positions China as a counterweight to Western pressure, advocating for a diplomatic approach that prioritizes national sovereignty.
