KAMPALA – In a bold move that defies his party’s leadership, Hajj Latif Sebaggala Sengendo has publicly announced his intention to run as an independent candidate for the position of Kawempe Division Mayor in the 2026 General Election.
The announcement signals a significant rupture with the National Unity Platform (NUP), the party under whose banner he has previously operated. His decision comes amidst an ongoing and often tense process within NUP to select its flag bearers for the upcoming elections.
Addressing his constituents directly, Sebaggala struck a populist tone. “I wish to assure the great people of Kawempe Division that People Power will always prevail over the people with power,” he declared, invoking the original “People Power” movement that formed the foundation of the NUP.
The statement, “I shall be on the ballot paper as an independent candidate,” confirms his outright rejection of the party’s internal electoral rules and any potential outcome that does not favour him. This sets the stage for a heated political battle in the division, potentially splitting the opposition vote.
Political analysts suggest this move reflects deeper frustrations within NUP regarding candidate selection and the concentration of power. By choosing to run independently, Sebaggala is betting on his personal popularity and deep-rooted connections within the Kawempe community to overcome the party’s machinery.
The NUP has yet to issue an official response to this act of defiance. The party now faces a critical test of its internal discipline and its ability to manage dissent without alienating its broader support base.
All eyes will now be on Kawempe Division as the 2026 elections approach, with Hajj Sebaggala’s independent bid promising to be a central and contentious feature of the race.
