Kawempe, Uganda – The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kawempe was filled to capacity on Tuesday as Edward Ssebuufu, commonly known as Eddie Mutwe, and Achileo Kivumbi, appeared to apply for bail amidst charges of aggravated robbery and other offenses.
The two men, who serve as heads of security for the National Unity Platform (NUP) principal, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, aka Bobi Wine, were met with a heavy show of support from their party. The courtroom audience included numerous NUP lawyers and Members of Parliament, led by the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi. It is understood that several of the attending MPs are prepared to stand surety for the accused.
The proceedings were punctuated by a highly emotional moment when a young girl, reported to be Eddie Mutwe’s daughter, approached the dock to greet her father. Before she could reach him, prison security personnel swiftly intervened and carried the distressed child away. The incident left both Mutwe and Kivumbi visibly emotional as they watched from the dock.
The case has drawn significant public attention, highlighting the continued legal challenges faced by opposition figures and their associates in Uganda. The court is expected to hear arguments from both the defense and prosecution before making a ruling on the bail application.
The charges of aggravated robbery are serious and non-bailable in many instances, making the outcome of today’s hearing a closely watched event. The presence of high-profile opposition leaders underscores the political significance attached to the case.
