Former British Soldier Denied Bail in Kenya Extradition Case Over 2012 Murder

A former British soldier accused of murdering a Kenyan woman more than a decade ago was refused bail in a London court on Monday, as he faces extradition proceedings to Kenya.
Robert Purkiss is wanted by Kenyan authorities for the murder of 21-year-old Agnes Wanjiru. The crime is alleged to have occurred near a British army training camp in the central Kenyan town of Nanyuki in 2012.
According to the court proceedings at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Purkiss was arrested earlier this month and has remained in custody since. Kenyan officials issued a warrant for his arrest in September.
Through his legal representatives, Purkiss “vigorously denies” any involvement in Wanjiru’s death.
The case has cast a renewed spotlight on the conduct of British troops stationed in Kenya and the long-delayed pursuit of justice for Wanjiru. The bail refusal means Purkiss will remain detained in the UK while the legal process for his potential extradition to Kenya continues.
