Former President Uhuru Kenyatta Discloses His Own Cancer Battle During Emotional Eulogy

NAIROBI, Kenya – In a heartfelt and unexpected public revelation, former President Uhuru Kenyatta disclosed on Friday that he is battling cancer, a fight he has kept private until now.
The poignant announcement was made during a eulogy for his close friend and mentor, Frank Ireri, the former CEO of HF Group, who passed away on October 26 at the age of 63 after his own battle with cancer. The funeral service was held at the Karura Community Chapel in Nairobi.
Speaking before mourners, Mr. Kenyatta credited Ireri not only for his leadership in transforming financial institutions but also for providing him with crucial mentorship and support during his own health challenges.
It was in this context of personal struggle that the former president revealed his diagnosis, framing it within the profound friendship and mutual support they shared.
While honoring Ireri’s legacy, Kenyatta issued a message of hope to others facing the disease, urging cancer patients to hold onto their faith. He also took a moment to critique a broader societal issue, suggesting that Kenya often prioritizes the accumulation of wealth over creating a lasting, positive impact on society—a value he implied his late friend embodied.
The disclosure marks a deeply personal moment for the former head of state, bringing to light a private health battle as he paid tribute to a friend who guided him through it.
