Four Dead, 13 Injured in Fatal Crash at Amungura Bridge on Busia–Tororo Road
Tororo | Tuesday, July 29, 2025 — A devastating early morning crash has claimed the lives of four people and left 13 others injured following a tragic road accident at Amungura Bridge along the Busia–Tororo Road.
According to Uganda Police, the accident occurred at approximately 6:40 AM and involved a motor vehicle with registration number UA 889AM and a pedestrian. Preliminary investigations reveal that the vehicle, reportedly travelling at high speed, knocked down a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road. The impact caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which veered off the road, struck the bridge, and plunged into River Malaba.
Three passengers in the vehicle died on the spot alongside the pedestrian, bringing the death toll to four. Thirteen others, including the driver, sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to Tororo Hospital for urgent medical attention. The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to the hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Police have since towed the wreckage to Busia Police Station, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are currently underway.
In a statement issued by @PoliceUg, authorities urged all road users, particularly motorists, to strictly observe speed limits and always give right of way to pedestrians, especially in busy and high-traffic areas, to prevent similar tragic incidents.
“This is a painful reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving. We appeal to all drivers to exercise caution, reduce speed, and remain alert at all times,” the police said.
The names of the deceased and injured are yet to be released as families are being notified.
