German President Steinmeier Embarks on Landmark Africa Trip, Starting in Egypt

CAIRO – German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has commenced a multi-nation visit to Africa, landing first in Egypt to highlight cultural ties before heading to Ghana and Angola for high-level political and economic talks.
The trip, which began in Cairo, saw President Steinmeier attend the prestigious opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), a monumental new institution near the Giza Pyramids. The museum, a project decades in the making, is set to display over 100,000 ancient artifacts, including the complete collection of treasures from Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Following his engagements in Egypt, President Steinmeier will make diplomatic history by traveling to Ghana and Angola. This will mark the first-ever visit by a German head of state to both West African nations, signaling a deepened commitment to bilateral relations.
A key objective of the tour is to recognize the efforts of Ghana and Angola in promoting peace and stability within their regions, with a particular focus on the increasingly volatile situation in West Africa. The German president’s itinerary is expected to include discussions on regional security cooperation.
Accompanying the president is a delegation of German business leaders, underscoring the economic dimension of the visit. The delegation aims to explore opportunities for strengthening trade and investment partnerships between Germany and the African nations.
The trip is seen as a significant step in reinforcing Germany’s strategic partnership with the African continent, blending cultural diplomacy with a focus on shared economic interests and regional security challenges.
