KAMPALA – The Ministry of Local Government has announced the procurement of a brand-new fleet of Toyota Double Cabin pick-up vehicles for all District Chairpersons, City Mayors, and Municipal Mayors across the country.
The initiative, funded by a UGX 35.2 billion allocation in the April supplementary budget, is aimed at enhancing the mobility and operational efficiency of local government leaders.
The Minister for Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magyezi, confirmed the development, stating that the first batch of 90 vehicles is scheduled to arrive in the country by the end of September 2025. The final batch is expected to be delivered two months later, in November 2025.
Minister Magyezi extended the government’s gratitude to the executive and legislative arms for approving the substantial funding. “We thank H. E. the President, Cabinet, and Parliament for appropriating UShs.35.2bn in the supplementary budget in April this year, for this purpose,” Magyezi said.
The Toyota Hilux Double Cabin is a popular model for government fleets in the region, known for its durability and ability to navigate various road conditions, which is seen as crucial for leaders who frequently travel to remote and rural areas within their jurisdictions.
This procurement is expected to significantly improve the delivery of services and oversight by ensuring local leaders can effectively monitor government projects and engage with constituents across their districts and cities. The move has been framed by the government as a critical investment in strengthening local governance and administrative capacity.
