Harris Blasts Trump’s ‘War of Choice’ in Iran as Reckless and Unauthorized
WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris launched a fierce critique of the Trump administration’s recent strikes on Iran on Saturday, condemning the operation as an unconstitutional “war of choice” that puts American lives at risk without the backing of the American people or Congress.
In a formal statement issued February 28, Harris accused President Donald Trump of breaking his core campaign promise to end wars, alleging that the White House is dragging the U.S. into a dangerous conflict under the guise of resolve.
“Donald Trump is dragging the United States into a war the American people do not want,” Harris said. “I am opposed to a regime-change war in Iran, and our troops are being put in harm’s way for the sake of Trump’s war of choice.”
The Vice President’s remarks follow the dramatic daylight strike on Tehran earlier this week, which targeted a senior leadership meeting and has drastically escalated tensions across the Middle East. While the administration has framed the operation as a precision counter-terrorism success, Harris characterized it as a reckless gamble with regional stability and American military personnel.
Calls for Congressional Authority
Harris emphasized that under the U.S. Constitution, the President must receive authorization from Congress to enter a war. She argued that even if such authorization were hypothetically possible, it would not change the fundamental fact that the action is “unwise, unjustified, and not supported by the American people.”
“There can be no equivocation in our opposition to Donald Trump’s war of choice,” she stated, calling on Congress to “use all available power to prevent him from further committing us to this conflict.”
The Vice President acknowledged the threat posed by Iran, stating firmly that Tehran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. However, she argued that the current military path is the wrong approach to dismantling that threat.
‘It Was a Lie’
Harris also took aim at what she described as the President’s pattern of misleading the public on national security. She specifically referenced Trump’s past claims regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
“During the campaign, Donald Trump promised to end wars rather than start them. It was a lie,” Harris said. “Then last year, he said ‘we obliterated’ Iran’s nuclear program. That, too, was a lie.”
The Vice President’s comments signal a sharp escalation in political rhetoric as the administration faces mounting scrutiny over its military strategy in the region. With the White House warning that the conflict may produce American casualties, Harris concluded her statement by directing her focus to the troops.
“Doug and I will be praying for all of our brave servicemen and women, who we know are undertaking dangerous missions with exceptional skill, discipline, and precision,” she said. “Our troops deserve a Commander-in-Chief who approaches decisions on matters of war and peace with the same steadiness and discipline our troops show every day.”
The White House has not yet issued a formal response to Harris’s statement.
