IRGC Confirms Martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei in Israeli Strike, Vows ‘Severe Punishment’
TEHRAN — The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has officially confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the Israeli strike on Tehran earlier this week, vowing “severe, decisive, and regret-inducing punishment” against the United States and Israel.
In a formal statement issued Saturday, the IRGC referred to Khamenei’s death as a “proud martyrdom,” describing the Supreme Leader as a “devout scholar” and the “leader of the martyrs among those awaiting the Promised One.” The confirmation ends days of speculation regarding the fate of Iran’s top official following the precision strike on a senior leadership meeting in the capital.
The statement, released under the official letterhead of the IRGC, invoked religious imagery and compared Khamenei’s death to that of Imam Ali, the revered Shia figure who was martyred during the holy month of Ramadan approximately 1,400 years ago. The timing of the strike during Ramadan was highlighted as a sign of the leader’s righteousness.
‘Hand of Vengeance’
The IRGC characterized the strike as a “criminal and terrorist act” carried out by the “malicious governments of the United States and the Zionist regime,” declaring it a violation of “religious, moral, legal, and international norms.”
In language signaling a massive retaliatory response, the IRGC stated: “The hand of vengeance of the Iranian nation, in imposing severe, decisive, and regret-inducing punishment upon the killers of the Imam of the Ummah, will not release them from its grasp.”
The armed forces vowed to continue Khamenei’s path “with greater strength and magnificence,” asserting that the leadership transition would not weaken the Islamic Republic’s resolve.
Succession and National Unity
The IRGC called on all segments of Iranian society to demonstrate “unity and cohesion” in the face of the enemy, urging a “passionate and epic presence in the arenas of national defense.”
The confirmation of Khamenei’s death triggers a complex succession process within the Islamic Republic, which has been led by the Supreme Leader since the 1979 revolution. The Assembly of Experts, a body of clerics responsible for selecting a successor, is now expected to convene to determine the future direction of the regime.
The IRGC statement framed the death not as a loss, but as a continuation: “His path and legacy will not cease; rather, they will continue with greater strength and magnificence. This martyrdom will make our nation even more resolute.”
As of this writing, the White House has not issued a formal response to the IRGC’s confirmation. Israeli officials have declined to comment on the specific confirmation of casualties.
