Kampala Experiences Flash Floods Following Heavy Rains, KCCA Responds Swiftly

KAMPALA – The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has issued an update and flood response report after the city received significant rainfall over a three-day period, leading to flash floods in several central areas.
According to data from the Makerere Meteorological Department, Kampala recorded a cumulative total of 63.4mm of rain between October 29th and 31st, 2025.
The intense rainfall tested the city’s drainage infrastructure, with recently improved channels largely performing well. Areas such as Soya-Bunga, the Soweto Bridge Crossing in Makindye, Lubigi, Nakamiro, Eliana Crossing on Masaka Road, and the Kibuli-Kayunga Channel effectively managed the runoff, showing the positive impact of recent KCCA interventions.
However, the downpour overwhelmed other parts of the city. Flash floods were reported in sections of Kyambogo along Jinja Road, the Nakivubo Channel, and around the Old Taxi Park. The flooding affected some basement-level business premises and merchandise.
In response, KCCA, in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force and the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), swiftly deployed equipment to evacuate water and clear debris from blocked drains. Engineering teams are currently on the ground, monitoring known hotspots, inspecting for blockages, and assessing affected sites for compliance with city regulations to guide further action.
City leadership has also visited the flood-affected areas to engage with stakeholders and persons directly impacted. This first-hand assessment is intended to help tailor appropriate remedial measures to prevent further occurrences and damages.
In a public appeal, KCCA urged residents and road users to exercise caution as the rains continue.
“The public is urged to avoid flood-prone areas, secure their property, and promptly report any drainage issues to KCCA,” the statement read.
The authority assured the public that it remains on high alert, with its drainage teams fully mobilized to respond to any emergencies and keep Kampala safe.
