Makerere University Celebrates Alumni Success in 2026 National Elections

Kampala, January 30, 2026 – Makerere University has issued a public statement celebrating the electoral victories of numerous former staff and students in the recently concluded 2026 national elections. The university hailed these wins as a testament to its enduring mission of nurturing leadership, academic excellence, and responsible citizenship.

In a press release dated January 29, 2026, the university expressed “immense pride” in the achievements of its alumni, framing their success as a strong affirmation of Makerere’s impact on national development and public service.
The congratulatory message highlighted a distinguished list of victors from the Makerere community, including senior university leadership, former staff, and a notable contingent of past student guild leaders.
Among the most prominent names cited are:
· Dr. Kiyonga Crispus Walter, the Chancellor of Makerere University, elected as MP for Bukonzo West.
· Rt. Hon. Tayebwa Thomas, former Chair of the University Council’s Finance Committee, re-elected unopposed as MP for Ruhinda North and approved as Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
· Hon. Nobert Mao, former Guild President, re-elected as MP for Laroo-Pece.
The list further includes over twenty other winners, encompassing former guild presidents, vice presidents, ministers, and staff from various colleges within the university who secured parliamentary seats, lord mayoralties, and district-level positions across the country.
However, in a subsequent revised statement, the University’s Public Relations Office acknowledged the challenge of compiling a fully exhaustive list. “Please accept our sincere apologies for the incomplete list we shared in our previous statement,” the update read. “In all honesty, trying to fit the Gallant Makerereans that deserve to be recognised and congratulated is an almost impossible feat.”
The university has now opened the floor for public contribution, stating: “However, and with your help in the comments, we can recognise even more Gallant Makerereans, beyond former staff and guild leadership that we have focused our list on. Kindly share any other Makerere Alumni wins and let’s recognise and celebrate them together.”
The original statement concluded by reiterating the university’s core values: “Makerere values dialogue, democracy, and responsible citizenship, and continues to make deliberate and progressive efforts to enhance participation in leadership and governance. We are confident they will serve with dedication, wisdom, and integrity.”
This wave of electoral success underscores Makerere University’s historic and ongoing role as a primary incubator for Uganda’s political and administrative leadership.
