KAMPALA – In a significant political development, Hillary Kiyaga, the Member of Parliament for Mawokota North, commonly known as Mazongito, has made a private approach to the leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) seeking forgiveness and a chance to retain his parliamentary seat on the party ticket.
According to exclusive information obtained by Ritah Kaggwa Blog, Kiyaga recently held a meeting with NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, where he is said to have “swallowed his pride” and asked for a second chance.
Sources familiar with the discussion indicate that the embattled MP formally acknowledged and accepted his past mistakes. He reportedly explained to Kyagulanyi that if reinstated and given the party’s mandate to run again, he would dedicate himself fully to party activities and would be significantly more active in legislative duties than he has been over the last five years.
This olive branch marks a potential turning point in a relationship that has been severely strained. Kiyaga fell out of favour with the party’s core leadership after he publicly criticized and launched verbal attacks against President Kyagulanyi. His actions led to widespread suspicion among party members, with many branding him a mole working against NUP’s interests.
This perception was further cemented when the MP made a decisive move to stop attending official functions and meetings at the party’s headquarters in Kavule, Mityana, effectively isolating himself from the party’s central command.
The NUP is yet to officially comment on this development or whether the leadership is considering his request. The party’s decision will be closely watched, as it will signal its stance on reconciling with members who have previously been critical of its leadership.
For now, Mazongito’s political future hangs in the balance, dependent on his boss’s willingness to forgive and forget.
