Mzee Nathan Okori Adiyo Dies on Son’s Death Anniversary
GULU, Uganda — Mzee Nathan Okori Adiyo, father of the late Parliament Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, passed away on Friday at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu following respiratory complications. He was 97.
The death comes exactly four years after Oulanyah, who served as Speaker of the 11th Parliament from 2021 until his death, succumbed to multi-organ failure in Seattle at age 56.
Mzee Okori had been rushed to the hospital two days prior to his death.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among confirmed the passing in a statement, expressing condolences on behalf of the parliamentary fraternity.
“It is with a heavy heart that I inform our esteemed colleagues, the Parliament fraternity, and all who loved our brother, the late Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah, that his father, Mzee Nathan Okori Adiyo, has passed away at the age of 97 at St Mary’s Hospital, Lacor,” Among said.
She added that funeral arrangements would be shared after consulting with the family.
Justice Minister Norbert Mao, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, and family member Andrew Ojok Oulanyah, who serves as Member of Parliament for Omoro County, also joined in conveying condolences.
The timing of the death has drawn widespread sorrow across Uganda, with public figures and citizens noting the compounded loss for Oulanyah’s home district of Omoro County, as the family loses its patriarch on the same date they remember their son.
