Nigerian Stars Shine Brightly at 9th AFRIMA Awards in Lagos
LAGOS, Nigeria – The 9th edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) transformed into a celebration of Nigerian musical excellence this weekend, with the nation’s artists claiming the ceremony’s most prestigious honours.
Held in Lagos, the awards night saw global superstar Burna Boy secure the Album of the Year trophy for his latest work, ‘No Sign of Weakness’. He also shared the Best African Collaboration award with fast-rising compatriot Shallipopi, whose viral hit ‘Laho’ additionally earned the coveted Song of the Year prize.
However, the title of the night’s biggest winner went to Rema, who cemented his status as a continental powerhouse by clinching three awards. His haul included the highly coveted Artiste of the Year award, capping off a landmark year for the “Calm Down” singer.
The Nigerian victory parade extended across genres and generations. Veteran performers Yemi Alade and Phyno added to their accolades, while exciting newcomers Qing Madi and Chella were also recognised, underscoring the depth of talent emerging from the country.
While Nigerian artists dominated the headline categories, AFRIMA lived up to its pan-African mandate by honouring stellar talent from across the continent. Wendy Shay (Ghana) was named Best Female Artiste in West Africa, Nontokozo Mkhize (South Africa) won Best Female Artiste in Southern Africa, and Tanzania’s Juma Jux took home the title of Best Male Artiste in Eastern Africa.
The ceremony, hosted in partnership with the African Union Commission, highlighted both the unifying power of African music and the current dominant force of Nigeria’s vibrant music industry on the global stage.
