KAMPALA – September 14, 2025 – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has pledged a renewed focus on addressing Uganda’s pressing socio-economic issues, emphasizing the core principles of patriotism and meritocracy. The resolution was a key outcome of the first meeting of the party’s 5th Central Executive Committee (CEC), held on Saturday, September 13, 2025.
In a move signaling a shift in internal priorities, the CEC unanimously agreed to champion a leadership model based on merit while actively discouraging careerism and populism within its ranks. To translate this into tangible action, the high-level committee established an ad hoc committee tasked with reviewing the remuneration structures for lower-level local government leaders.
The powerful remuneration review committee will be chaired by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among. She will be assisted by NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, Mr. Hassan Basajjabalaba, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, Hon. Matia Kasaija, and Hon. Musa Ecweru.
In a significant update on party internal elections, the CEC received a comprehensive briefing on the NRM Electoral Roadmap. The committee set Wednesday, September 18, 2025, as the date for conducting elections for Youth and Entrepreneur league committees at the district and city levels nationwide.
To ensure the integrity and smooth execution of these polls, the CEC has directed the involved National Electoral Commission officials to work closely with the Uganda Police Force and other security agencies. In a bid to enhance transparency, the party’s voter register will be released to all aspiring candidates well in advance of the election date.
In a notable administrative change, the CEC resolved to relieve Dr. Tanga Odoi of his duties in managing the Youth League elections. This responsibility has been reassigned to a team of commissioners led by Hon. Jachan Omach, who will now oversee the electoral process for the party’s youth wing.
The decisions made during this inaugural meeting of the new CEC are seen as critical steps in strengthening the party’s grassroots structures and reaffirming its commitment to governance and service delivery ahead of future national electoral cycles.
