KAMPALA – In a powerful show of organizational strength, supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) have presented a massive petition containing over 2.2 million signatures to the Electoral Commission, endorsing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the party’s flag bearer for the 2026 presidential elections.

The signatures, compiled in a formal submission, were delivered to the electoral body by a delegation of party officials and supporters who marched to the commission’s offices today. The move is a significant step in solidifying President Museveni’s candidacy for what would extend his over three-decade tenure.

According to NRM officials, the overwhelming number of signatures was not the result of a public drive but a systematic collection effort utilizing the party’s deeply entrenched nationwide network. The signatures were gathered by district leaders across the country, demonstrating the NRM’s robust and established organizational structures from the grassroots level up.
“The signatures were gathered by district leaders countrywide, utilizing the NRM’s established organisational structures,” a party official stated, underscoring the methodical nature of the campaign.
This development comes just ahead of the official nomination process for presidential aspirants, which the Electoral Commission has scheduled for September 23 and 24. By presenting these signatures now, the NRM aims to preemptively showcase overwhelming internal support and present President Museveni’s nomination as a fait accompli, backed by the will of millions of party supporters.
The 2026 elections are expected to be a pivotal moment for Uganda, and President Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, is widely anticipated to run again. This early demonstration of support sets the stage for what will likely be a closely watched electoral process.
