Police Accuse NUP’s Kyagulanyi of Causing Campaign Standoff in Kakumiro

KAKUMIRO, Uganda – October 21, 2025 – A campaign event for National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) in Kakumiro District was marred by a standoff with police today, with authorities accusing the candidate of deliberately deviating from an agreed-upon security plan.
In a press release issued by the Uganda Police Force, the incident began around 11:00 a.m. when Kyagulanyi arrived in Nalweyo Town Council. According to the police, the candidate was scheduled to proceed directly to a playground in Kisiita Town Council for his first rally but “insisted on deviating from the agreed route and demanded passage through Kakumiro Town Council.”
The statement alleges that despite “repeated guidance” from officers, Kyagulanyi and his driver “disobeyed police directions and drove on the pavement.” The police claim their officers “exercised restraint and let his convoy move on.”
The situation escalated in Kakumiro Town Council when the candidate proceeded to Kakeeka Playground instead of the pre-approved venue in Kisiita. This move, according to the police, “caused a stand off with police officers.”
Tensions reportedly flared when the police attempted to direct the crowd to the agreed venue. The police statement describes the crowd as becoming “wild and unruly,” forcing officers to block their advance with a police vehicle. The confrontation resulted in damage to the windscreen of police vehicle registration UP 7694 after individuals from the crowd “confronted the vehicle’s driver.”
To de-escalate the situation, police allowed the rally to proceed at Kakeeka Playground. The press release notes that officers subsequently “managed to contain the crowd without incident,” and secured a police helicopter that was stationed at the venue.
After the Kakeeka rally, Kyagulanyi proceeded to the originally scheduled venue in Kisiita, concluding his campaign activities around 5:42 p.m. before moving on to Kikuube District.
The Uganda Police Force concluded its statement with a warning, urging “candidate Kyagulanyi and his supporters to adhere to the positions agreed upon with his organizing teams.” It further stated that while officers remain committed to professionalism, “they continue to face increasing confrontation and provocation. That will not be tolerated.”
