Premier League Clubs Unite with Samaritans to Combat Suicide Stigma on World Prevention Day
LONDON – In a powerful move to change the conversation around mental health, the Premier League and its member clubs have joined a vital campaign to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, observed globally on September 10, 2025.
The initiative, under the global theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” is part of the #TogetherAgainstSuicide campaign in partnership with the suicide prevention charity Samaritans. The effort aims to break down stigma and encourage open, supportive conversations, providing critical resources to football fans across the country.
Clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea are leveraging their massive platforms to reach those in need. In a post on X, Manchester United highlighted a sobering statistic: “Every 90 minutes, someone in the UK takes their own life.” The club’s message emphasized reciprocity with its fanbase, stating, “You support us. Let us support you.”
The campaign is part of a larger global effort led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) to prevent the more than 700,000 suicides that occur worldwide each year. By providing information and access to support services like Samaritans, the Premier League hopes to direct help to those who need it most.
World Suicide Prevention Day serves as an annual reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the role communities play in supporting one another.
