Qatar Summons Iranian Ambassador, Issues Stern Warning Over Territorial Violations
DOHA — The State of Qatar has summoned Iran’s ambassador to issue a formal protest following the targeting of Qatari territory during this week’s wave of Iranian retaliatory strikes, warning that such actions threaten bilateral relations and constitute a “blatant violation” of international law.
In an official statement released February 28, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that HE Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Salehabadi was called before HE Minister of State Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Al Khulaifi to receive Doha’s “strong protest, deep dissatisfaction, and categorical rejection” of the incursion.
The development follows Iran’s large-scale missile barrage, launched in response to the Israeli strike on Tehran’s senior leadership. While most projectiles were intercepted, debris and impacts were reported across multiple countries, including the United Arab Emirates and now, reportedly, Qatar.
‘Reckless and Irresponsible’
The Qatari government described the incident as a “reckless and irresponsible act” that is “completely inconsistent with the principles of good neighborliness.”
Dr. Al Khulaifi emphasized to the Iranian envoy that the targeting of Qatari soil caused “fear among civilians and damage to residential areas.” He stressed that a repetition of such actions would lead to “serious repercussions” for the relationship between Doha and Tehran.
This diplomatic rebuke is particularly significant given Qatar’s longstanding role as a mediator in regional conflicts. Doha has historically maintained open channels with Tehran, often positioning itself as a bridge between Iran and Western powers.
A Delicate Balance Strained
The statement explicitly noted that the State of Qatar has “worked diligently to support diplomatic solutions aimed at de-escalation,” implying that the Iranian military action has undermined those ongoing efforts.
The Ministry called for an “immediate return to dialogue and diplomatic channels” and urged a halt to military operations that pose a direct threat to regional security.
The Iranian Embassy in Doha has not yet issued a public response to the formal protest. The summons marks one of the strongest public rebukes of Iran by a Gulf state since the commencement of hostilities earlier this week.
