Event held at Kabira Country Club to announce three-day medical camp in Bukedea District
KAMPALA, UGANDA — The Ruparelia Foundation has officially launched a free eye care initiative in honor of the late Rajiv Ruparelia, who passed away in a car accident along Busabala Road in May last year. The launch event took place this evening at Kabira Country Club, bringing together foundation leaders, partners, and friends of the late philanthropist.
The flagship initiative, named the RR Eye Camp, is scheduled to run from Friday, March 27 to Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Bukedea Teaching Hospital in Bukedea District. The camp aims to provide comprehensive eye care services to underserved communities in the area.
Services to be Provided
According to announcements made at the launch, the eye camp will offer:
· Free eye screenings and basic treatment for at least 2,000 individuals
· 300 cataract surgeries
· 50 specialized surgeries for children
· Distribution of spectacles to over 1,000 persons
A Tribute to Rajiv’s Legacy
Jyotsna Ruparelia, director of the Ruparelia Group of Companies, addressed attendees, emphasizing the personal significance of the initiative.
“This eye camp is special to us because it is in memory of our son, Rajiv, who deeply believed in philanthropy,” she said.
Rajiv Ruparelia was described by friends and family as a staunch advocate of giving back to the community, and the camp seeks to continue his vision of service to humanity.
Speaker Among Commends Initiative
Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among attended the launch and pledged her support for the cause. She praised the Ruparelia Foundation, led by city businessman Sudhir Ruparelia, for complementing government efforts in healthcare delivery.
“I expressed my appreciation to the Ruparelia Foundation for augmenting government initiatives by bringing essential services closer to the community, thereby serving humanity,” Among said.
The Speaker also extended gratitude to the Ruparelia family for upholding Rajiv’s philanthropic legacy.
Partnership Approach
The eye camp is being organized in collaboration with various partners and friends of the late Rajiv Ruparelia. The initiative reflects a growing trend of public-private partnerships in addressing healthcare gaps in Uganda, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Future Plans
Foundation representatives indicated that this camp is part of a broader commitment to regular eye care outreach. Similar camps are planned every two years to reach underserved areas across the country, ensuring that quality eye care services reach those who need them most.
The Bukedea camp represents the first major health initiative launched in Rajiv Ruparelia’s memory, combining practical healthcare delivery with the spirit of philanthropy he embodied during his lifetime.
