Ruto Hosts Mozambique’s Maria Benvinda Levy to Bolster Bilateral Ties
President William Ruto welcomed Mozambique Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levy to State House in Nairobi on Monday for talks focused on strengthening trade and investment between the two nations.
The discussions built upon a foundation of 50 years of diplomatic relations. In a post on X, President Ruto described the bilateral and diplomatic ties as “strong and cordial,” highlighting that they have been “boosted by trade and economic agreements on agriculture, the blue economy and investment.”
The meeting served to advance eight memoranda of understanding that were signed during President Ruto’s historic state visit to Mozambique in August 2023. Those agreements cover a wide range of areas, including cooperation in value addition for key agricultural products like tea, sugar, and coffee. Other areas of collaboration include the blue economy, legal assistance, and public service training.
A significant achievement noted by both leaders was the 2018 90-day visa waiver for citizens of Kenya and Mozambique. Officials acknowledged that this policy has successfully increased people-to-people interactions.
The talks also emphasized the potential for new joint ventures, particularly in the critical sectors of renewable energy and food security, as the region navigates ongoing challenges.
