Security Thwarts Major Robbery Attempt at National Medical Stores Warehouse in Entebbe
ENTEBBE – January 12, 2026 – A joint security operation successfully prevented a large-scale robbery of critical medical supplies valued at millions of shillings from the National Medical Stores (NMS) warehouse in Entebbe in the early hours of Sunday.
The Director of the State House Health Monitoring Unit, Dr. Warren Namara, confirmed the incident, revealing that the attempted break-in was foiled by security forces. Three suspects are currently in custody, with two receiving medical treatment following the operation.
According to Dr. Namara, the thieves were intercepted while loading stolen equipment into a Toyota Hiace van bearing fake license plates—UBB 677Q at the front and UBD 677Q at the rear—parked near the facility’s entrance on Kampala Road.
“This was not a one-off or an unplanned event. It was a planned operation, and we don’t think it was their first time given the level of organization observed,” Dr. Namara stated. He pointed out details such as fake yellow cello tape used to alter the vehicle and signs of significant premeditation.
The suspects reportedly used a gas regulator connected to welding equipment in an attempt to burn through metal barriers and gain access to the warehouse.
Ms. Sheilla Nduhukire, Principal Public Relations Officer for NMS, disclosed that the thieves aimed to steal supplies worth approximately UGX 100 million. “Security was able to recover 78 boxes of disposable gloves and 19 boxes of oxygen regulators,” she said. “These items have been moved to Entebbe Police Station as part of the ongoing investigation.”
Dr. Namara added that his unit is collaborating closely with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to interrogate the suspects as a full investigation into the attempted robbery begins.
The National Medical Stores is a key government agency responsible for the procurement, storage, and distribution of essential medicines and medical supplies to public health facilities across Uganda.
