KYENJOJO, UGANDA – In a demonstration of hands-on leadership, the Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, has personally assessed the dilapidated state of a major western highway and issued a direct, time-bound directive for its immediate repair.
The Speaker’s action stemmed from a fact-finding mission. In a post on her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Speaker Among revealed that His Excellency the President had offered her his helicopter for travel. However, upon learning of the terrible condition of the Mityana-Mubende-Kyegegwa-Kyenjojo road, she deliberately chose to travel by road to witness the situation firsthand.
Her assessment confirmed the worst. “It is clear that the road urgently needs rehabilitation,” she stated, underscoring the severe challenges the crumbling infrastructure poses to commerce, travel, and the daily lives of citizens in the region.
Demonstrating the authority of her office, Speaker Among took decisive action on the spot. She announced that she had instructed the Minister of Finance, who was present during the journey, to secure all necessary funding for the project within two weeks.
“I instructed the Minister of Finance, who was present with us, to secure the necessary funds within two weeks so that we can begin work on the road without further delay,” she wrote.
This public ultimatum from the third-highest-ranking official in the country significantly raises the stakes for the Ministry of Finance and places the rehabilitation project on a fast track. The move has been met with widespread approval from the public online, who have praised the Speaker for her pragmatic approach and decisive leadership.
The directive is expected to accelerate a project vital for economic stability and regional connectivity. All attention will now be on the Finance Ministry to meet the two-week deadline set by the Speaker of Parliament.
