Tanzanian Rice Truck Spotted in Wakiso Amid Trade Disparities in EAC

Wakiso, Uganda – August 2, 2025
A Tanzanian-registered truck delivering a consignment of rice was seen this morning deep in Luteete, Wakiso District, highlighting Uganda’s open-door policy on regional trade despite recent restrictive measures by its neighbour, Tanzania.
The incident has drawn attention to growing concerns over uneven implementation of the East African Community (EAC) Common Market Protocol (CMP), which advocates for the free movement of goods, labour, capital, and the right of establishment across member states.
While Ugandan rice farmers continue to produce and compete in local markets, imported rice from Tanzania continues to flow in unimpeded. There are currently no trade restrictions or barriers imposed by Uganda on such imports, reflecting the country’s adherence to the principles of regional integration.
In contrast, Tanzania recently imposed fresh bans on foreigners operating in select sectors, a move that critics say contravenes the CMP. The ban effectively restricts business opportunities for other EAC citizens, raising questions about protectionist practices within the regional bloc.
Trade analysts and regional integration advocates are calling for renewed dialogue within the EAC framework to ensure uniform application of agreed protocols and to protect the spirit of economic cooperation.
As intra-EAC trade continues to grow, observers stress that mutual trust, equal opportunity, and policy harmonisation remain vital to achieving a fully integrated and prosperous East African Community.
