Tensions Flare in Cameroon as Protesters Clash with Security Over Election Results
YAOUNDÉ, Cameroon – At least four people were killed and more than 100 were arrested in Cameroon on Tuesday as supporters of the opposition clashed with security forces during protests demanding the release of credible presidential election results.
The demonstrations erupted amid heightened tensions ahead of the official announcement of the vote’s outcome, which is expected today. Protesters accuse the government of attempting to rig the election in favor of the incumbent.
Local officials confirmed the deaths occurred during the clashes, which saw opposition supporters take to the streets in several regions. In one area alone, security officers arrested over 100 individuals.
The protesters are demanding that electoral authorities acknowledge the claimed victory of opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary and immediately release the final tally. They allege that the delayed announcement is a tactic to manipulate the results.
The government has not yet issued a formal statement on the allegations of vote-rigging. The nation remains on edge as it awaits the official results, which will determine the political trajectory of the Central African country.
