KAMPALA – A wave of sorrow has engulfed Uganda’s political and economic circles following the tragic passing of Nsereko Kyamukungubya Kiwanuka, the youngest son of esteemed former Finance Minister and current Presidential Senior Advisor on Economics and Finance, Maria Kiwanuka.
Nsereko was discovered deceased last Wednesday in his rented apartment in Washington, D.C., United States. Preliminary reports from doctors who examined the scene indicate the cause of death was a sudden heart attack.
The alarming discovery was made after the young man failed to report to work, prompting concern from a family friend. The friend, unable to reach Nsereko, alerted the local Washington, D.C. police department. Officers responded to his residence and, upon receiving no answer at the locked door, were forced to make entry.
Inside, they found Nsereko unresponsive. A poignant detail from the scene was that the television in the apartment was still switched on, suggesting his passing was sudden and unexpected.
The news has sent shockwaves through Uganda, where Maria Kiwanuka is a highly respected figure. She served as the nation’s Finance Minister from 2011 to 2015 and is currently a key economic advisor to President Yoweri Museveni, valued for her expertise and steady leadership.
The family has yet to make a public statement as they navigate this profound period of grief. The Ugandan Embassy in Washington, D.C., is understood to be providing consular assistance and facilitating arrangements to repatriate Nsereko’s body to Uganda for burial.
Condolences have begun pouring in from colleagues, government officials, and citizens alike, all expressing their sympathy to the Kiwanuka family for their immense loss. The sudden nature of the tragedy has been a sobering reminder of life’s fragility, even for those in the highest echelons of society.
