Uganda Airlines Faces Flight Disruptions on Long-Haul Routes Due to Operational Challenges
ENTEBBE – Uganda Airlines has confirmed that it is experiencing significant delays and cancellations on its international long-haul flights, attributing the disruptions to “operational challenges.”
The issues first came to light when passengers booked on the Entebbe to Dubai route reported multiple reschedules. Some travellers were reportedly informed that their flights would not depart until Sunday.
In a statement addressing the situation, the national carrier said, “We are currently experiencing disruptions on our long-haul schedules operated with our Airbus A330-800neo aircraft.” While the airline did not specify the exact nature of the challenges, it confirmed that the problems are primarily affecting flights operated by its two wide-body Airbus A330-800neo jets.
These aircraft are crucial for Uganda Airlines’ three key long-haul routes:
· Entebbe–London Gatwick (four flights weekly)
· Entebbe–Dubai (four flights weekly)
· Entebbe–Mumbai (three flights weekly)
The airline’s regional operations within Africa, serviced by a fleet of smaller Bombardier CRJ-900 jets, remain unaffected.
Industry observers suggest that the airline’s small long-haul fleet, consisting of just two Airbus A330neos, may be under significant strain with tight turnaround times between flights. This operational pressure coincides with reports of growing demand, particularly on the London route, where cargo bookings are reportedly at full capacity “several months ahead.” The Dubai route remains the carrier’s most lucrative for both passengers and freight.
The disruptions come as Uganda Airlines pursues an ambitious 10-year growth strategy. The plans include acquiring six additional jets, with two dedicated to cargo, and launching new long-haul routes to destinations such as Jeddah, Riyadh, and Guangzhou. The airline also aims to expand its regional network to include cities like Accra and Cape Town. The current challenges highlight the growing pains associated with the carrier’s expansion efforts.
