KYOTERA, Uganda – The Uganda Police Force is mourning the sudden death of Commissioner of Police Maate Godfrey, who collapsed and died on October 19 while supervising operations in Kyotera District, southern Uganda.
Commissioner Maate was the commander of the Sango Bay Police Operations. According to an official announcement from the Uganda Police Force on social media platform X, he passed away yesterday in the line of duty.
The police force paid tribute to his extensive career, which spanned decades. He was noted for rising through the ranks from a constable to hold several senior command roles in various regions, including Kasese and Greater Masaka.
A post-mortem examination is currently underway to determine the exact cause of his sudden death.
His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and media outlets. The commissioner’s death comes amid reports of his involvement in controversial land repossession operations, though it is not yet clear if this is connected to his passing.
