Uganda Receives $53 Million Military Donation from Russia, President Museveni Launches New Facilities

KAMPALA – Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has announced the receipt of a military equipment donation valued at $53 million from the Russian Federation. The announcement was made via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

In his post, President Museveni referred to Russia as “our ideological and strategic friends” and expressed his gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the support, which he described as “beneficial.” He further stated that “Russia is a historic and very good friend of Africa.”
The donation coincides with the launch of new domestic military maintenance capabilities. The President commissioned the new Military Mechanised Major Repair Facility at the Gaddafi Military Barracks in Magamaga. A supporting workshop at Entebbe Airport is also under construction. These facilities are intended to bolster the maintenance and repair capacity of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), particularly for armored vehicles.

This substantial donation underscores the deepening military-technical cooperation between Uganda and Russia. Reports indicate that this relationship has been strengthened through recent joint commissions and technology transfers since 2022.
