NAIROBI, Kenya – In a powerful demonstration of regional solidarity and respect, a high-level official delegation from the Republic of Uganda arrived in Kenya to pay their final respects to the late former Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga.
The delegation, representing His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, was led by two distinguished statesmen: the Right Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, former Prime Minister and Special Envoy to the President, and the Hon. John Mulimba, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in Charge of Regional Cooperation.
Upon their arrival in Nairobi, the delegation was formally received by the staff of the Uganda High Commission, underscoring the diplomatic significance of the visit.
The primary mission of the envoys was to represent Uganda at the state funeral and final burial ceremony of the veteran Kenyan politician. The solemn events culminated at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo, Siaya County, the Odinga family’s ancestral home.
In Bondo, the Ugandan officials joined thousands of mourners, including regional leaders, dignitaries, and citizens, in a final send-off for the former Prime Minister. The presence of such a senior delegation, led by a former head of government and a sitting minister responsible for regional cooperation, highlights the late Raila Odinga’s immense stature as a pan-African figure and the importance Uganda places on its bilateral relationship with Kenya.
The attendance of Dr. Rugunda and Minister Mulimba signifies deep condolences from the people and government of Uganda, acknowledging Raila Odinga’s pivotal role not only in Kenyan politics but also in the broader East African community. His passing is mourned as a loss to the entire region.
