The nomination process for Uganda’s special interest parliamentary seats, including the influential National Youth MP positions, commenced on October 22nd at district offices nationwide. The proceedings have highlighted a growing challenge to the long-standing dominance of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), with independent candidates stepping into the fray.
A prominent figure emerging in the race is Julia Muhumuza, a 24-year-old Oxford scholar and social entrepreneur. Running as an independent for the female youth MP seat, Muhumuza has declared her candidacy on a platform centered on inclusive education and expanded economic opportunities for the nation’s youth. She is set to face the incumbent NRM candidate, Diana Ampaire Kampe.
In the male youth MP race, another independent candidate, Simon, a former university guild leader, is also seeking to break the established party strongholds. This comes amid increasing demands from the youth for more effective and responsive representation.
The 2026 election cycle is being closely watched to see if independent or opposition candidates can successfully challenge the NRM’s historical control over these key positions dedicated to representing the interests of Ugandan youth.
