NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – The 37th Ugandan North American Association (UNAA) Convention commenced with a strong message from the Ugandan government, urging its citizens abroad to actively participate in state-led programs aimed at improving their welfare.
The opening event, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, featured addresses from key government officials who underscored the administration’s commitment to its diaspora community. Mr. Mohammed Bagonza, the Head of the State House Diaspora Unit, was a featured speaker and called on Ugandans living abroad to embrace government initiatives specifically designed to address their unique challenges.
A significant part of Mr. Bagonza’s address focused on economics. He emphasised the critical need to profile diaspora-led investments—spanning sectors like accommodation, transport, and restaurants—into a formal, comprehensive business directory.
“This directory will not only enhance the visibility of Ugandan-owned businesses but will also serve as a vital resource for visiting government officials,” Bagonza stated. He explained that the guide would enable officials to “prioritise and support these enterprises” during their travels abroad, fostering a stronger connection between the homeland and its diaspora entrepreneurs.
The convention also heard from Dr. Hilary Musoke, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Agribusiness and Value-Addition Development. Dr. Musoke highlighted the pivotal role President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni continues to play in promoting value addition as a cornerstone of Uganda’s socio-economic transformation. His remarks reinforced the government’s focus on agribusiness as a key sector for investment and development, appealing to the diaspora’s potential role in this national agenda.
The gathering was graced by the Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa, Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, who attended as the Chief Guest. She was joined by the President of UNAA, Mr. Lambert Etibot, and hundreds of Ugandans from across the United States and Canada.
The event, marked by a spirit of collaboration and national pride, sets the stage for further discussions on investment, community, and the strengthening of ties between Uganda and its vibrant North American diaspora.
