Ugandan Security Forces Raid Hotel Hosting Opposition Leader Bobi Wine

LIRA CITY, Uganda – Ugandan police and military forces conducted a late-night raid on a hotel housing opposition leader Bobi Wine in Lira City on Tuesday, an operation that has escalated tensions in the country.
According to accounts from Bobi Wine and his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), security forces targeted the Tembo Trek Courts hotel, breaking into rooms and deploying pepper spray. The operation was reportedly commanded by an officer named Moses Mukilibi.
Authorities stated the raid was aimed at arresting a specific individual: Geoffrey Unzima, a member of Bobi Wine’s campaign team. The police accuse Unzima of being involved in an attack on a police surveillance vehicle during the opposition leader’s presidential campaign tour.
The raid caused significant chaos at the hotel. The receptionist was arrested, and at least one supporter was hospitalized in critical condition due to the violence. Bobi Wine himself confronted the security forces on camera during the incident, after which the forces retreated from the scene.
In a post on the social media platform X, Bobi Wine decried the action, writing, “Our hotel in Lira City has been raided by the police and military… They’re currently breaking into the rooms,” and using the hashtag #FreeUgandaNow.
However, the Uganda Police Force presented a different narrative, describing the operation as a law enforcement action to address a criminal case that was unrelated to the opposition leader.
This event is the latest in a series of confrontations between the government of long-time President Yoweri Museveni and the opposition, led by the popular singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine.
