Uganda’s Shs50,000 Note Ranked Among World’s Most Beautiful; Designed by Late Gen Elly Tumwine
Kampala, Uganda – Uganda’s Shs50,000 banknote has once again earned global recognition, being voted the most beautiful currency in Africa and the fifth most beautiful in the world.
The note, which features Uganda’s rich natural and cultural heritage, continues to stand out internationally for its vibrant artistic design and strong security features.
In a recent revelation, Cynthia Tumwine disclosed that her late father, Gen Elly Tumwine, was the creative mind behind the design of the Shs50,000 note.

Gen Tumwine, remembered as a bush war hero, politician, and statesman, was also a gifted artist who left a lasting mark on Uganda’s national identity through his creative works. Beyond the Shs50,000 note, he is credited with designing the current Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) uniform, as well as contributing to the design of the national emblem and other symbolic works that reflect Uganda’s history and culture.
His daughter described the recognition of the currency as a celebration not only of Uganda’s financial identity but also of her father’s enduring artistic legacy.
Bank of Uganda officials have welcomed the ranking, noting that the Shs50,000 note symbolizes Uganda’s resilience, cultural heritage, and natural beauty, while also standing as a testament to the creativity of one of the country’s most prominent figures.
