
UN Secretary-General Condemns Military Escalation Between U.S., Israel, and Iran
New York, NY – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a strong condemnation of the recent surge in military hostilities in the Middle East, urging all parties to cease hostilities and return to the negotiating table.
In a statement released on Saturday, Guterres expressed alarm over the deteriorating security situation following what he described as “today’s military escalation.”
“I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East,” Guterres stated. “The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace & security.”
The Secretary-General emphasized that such actions violate the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter. He reminded all Member States of their binding obligations to refrain from the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
“The Charter clearly prohibits ‘the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations,'” he said.
Guterres made an urgent appeal for an immediate cessation of hostilities, warning that failure to de-escalate could trigger a wider regional conflict with devastating consequences for civilian populations.
“I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation,” Guterres urged. “Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.”
Reaffirming the UN’s core mission, the Secretary-General stressed that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward. He reiterated that there is no alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes in full accordance with the UN Charter, which provides the essential foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.
