NAIROBI, Kenya – A small plane carrying 12 people crashed in Kenya early Tuesday while traveling from the coastal town of Diani to the world-famous Maasai Mara National Park, authorities reported. All on board are feared dead.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed the accident, stating the aircraft went down around 5:30 a.m. local time (0230 GMT). The flight was headed for Kichwa Tembo, a private airstrip that serves tourists visiting the renowned wildlife reserve.
In a press release, the KCAA said that government agencies have been dispatched to the crash site to initiate an investigation and determine the cause of the accident. The authority did not immediately provide details on the nationalities of those on board.
The Maasai Mara is a prime tourist destination, particularly for safari-goers, and light aircraft are a common mode of transport for visitors traveling from the Kenyan coast to the park. This tragic event has cast a shadow over the region’s tourism industry as authorities work to uncover the circumstances behind the crash.
